About NKN

A promise that no child should trade their childhood for a diagnosis.

Neuro Kids Now (NKN) is a youth-led nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of pediatric patients with neurological disorders. Our work focuses on normalizing their childhood experiences and building a compassionate community through five service programs.

We donate toys & books, cards & crafts, patient pen pals, dream care packages, hospital resources, and we do patient interactions. Every initiative is powered by a passionate youth-led team committed to empowering their peers.

Founding Story

Shriya's promise, born from love, frustration, and hope.

Growing up, Shriya saw firsthand what it meant for a child to live with a neurological condition. She watched close ones trade recess for recovery, birthday parties for hospital rooms, and the ease of childhood for something far more complicated.

What kids with neurological conditions often needed most wasn't more sympathy or statistics—it was joy. A space where they could just be kids, where their experiences were seen and celebrated.

So she built it. What started as a few donated toys and a book drive grew into a movement as families reached out, hospitals listened, and volunteers joined, all rooted in one clear mission: bring joy, creativity, and care to kids navigating neurological differences as whole people with voices, dreams, and potential.

Patient Stories

Here are some patient stories that reflect our mission!

Evelyn R., age 4

Brain tumor recovery

When Evelyn was diagnosed with a brain tumor, everything became hospital life really fast. Surgeries, scans, recovery days where she didn't even have the energy to talk much. It was a long stretch where she felt more tired than anything else.

During one of her longer hospital stays, Neuro Kids Now came in. At first Evelyn barely responded, she was just quiet most days. But they didn't push her. They just sat with her and slowly started talking about things she liked. She mentioned princesses and coloring.

A few days later, they came back with a small surprise setup in her room. Handmade princess cards, coloring books, and a simple birthday celebration since she had missed hers while in treatment. She called it her princess hospital day.

It was the first time she smiled in weeks. And more than that, it felt like she wasn't just a patient in recovery. She was a kid having a moment that belonged to her.

Epilepsy

Jason was 4 when he was diagnosed with epilepsy, and honestly the hardest part wasn't just the seizures, it was how much it affected his confidence. He stopped wanting to go out, stopped wanting attention, and started isolating himself a lot. We were struggling to get him back to feeling like himself.

Neuro Kids Now reached out through the hospital and asked if they could connect with him. Jason was hesitant at first, but they kept things simple. No pressure. Just conversations about what he liked. He mentioned video games and basketball.

Later, they organized a small birthday-style hangout for him during one of his follow-up visits. It wasn't a big party, just a few volunteers, snacks, and game themed decorations. But Jason actually stayed the whole time and interacted, which was something we had not seen in a while.

For us, the biggest impact was seeing him come out of his shell even for a couple hours. It reminded him he was still a kid, and we loved to see it and really appreciate NKN.

Developmental delay

Oliver is 5 and has a developmental delay that affects his speech and learning. A lot of people underestimate him because he doesn't communicate the same way other kids his age do. We've had a lot of appointments where he gets overwhelmed or just shuts down completely. It's been hard to find things that actually reach him.

Neuro Kids Now did something really simple that ended up meaning a lot. They brought sensory friendly toys and soft activities that he could actually engage with at his own pace.

They also helped create a small birthday moment for him during one of his therapy days. It was very calm, just soft decorations, a few familiar faces, and toys he could interact with comfortably. He kept holding onto a little animal toy they gave him the whole time.

He doesn't really say much yet, but he kept smiling and staying engaged, which for him is huge. As parents, it felt like someone finally understood that progress does not have to look big to matter. Even small moments like that change things for him.

Voices

In their own words.

What families, hospital staff, volunteers, and the kids themselves say about the work we do together.

"Neuro Kids Now helped make my son's birthday incredibly special. They helped provide decorations, activities, gifts, and everything needed to create a celebration he will remember forever. For a day, he wasn't thinking about appointments or treatments, he was just a happy kid enjoying his birthday."
